SACRAMENT OF FORGIVENESS

FINANCES
Bankers Orders for the Parish and Parish Centre amount to £3500 per month. We are grateful for your generous support in collections. If you can manage a little more from time to time, it would be a great help. A Standing Order would make the handling of money so much easier. Have you signed a Gift Aid form? If you are a taxpayer the Church would get 25p added to every £1 you donate.
COLLECTIONS
Last weekend's Offertory collection amounted to £717.71 and the Maintenance Fund collection to £227.93 - thanks.
GIFT AID
The Inland Revenue now requires us to use a new style of Gift Aid form. These are available at the back of the Church and on the parish website. If you pay tax, please complete the new form and return it to the box provided. This allows us to provide the additional information required on the Gift Aid claim. Gift Aid is a vital source of income. All that is needed is that you pay tax. You simply declare that you give funds to the Church. We do the rest. Why not sign a form today? We get back an extra 25p for every £1 you give the Church in your weekly collection or by way of a donation. There is no need to cancel or renew it. We simply claim in the income we receive.

HOLY HOURS DURING THE EASTER SEASON IN SAINT MARY'S DEANERY
There have been and will be Holy Hour services, arranged by the Spirituality
Group, in the Churches of Saint Mary's Deanery throughout April and May. These
provide an opportunity to listen and to contemplate what God is saying to
us. All take place on Sundays at 3.00pm. The last dates and places are:

FIRST HOLY COMMUNION
Please remember our First Communion children in your prayers. First Holy Communion
will be on Sunday 13 May at the 10.30am Mass. We pray that all our children
have a day of grace and joy.
FOUR SIMPLE WAYS TO INCREASE YOUR DEVOTION AT EVERY MASS
1 Be intentional when you enter the Church. A simple way to recognise
the importance of the Mass and the beauty of the Church is to be mindful and
intentional when entering the doors of the church. The door presents the key
feature of the church's face.
2 Make the sign of the cross. When you enter the Church, the next
thing you do is to dip your fingers into the holy water font and make the
sign of the cross. It reminds us of the reality of the Trinity.
3 Listen to the readings during Mass. How often have you sat in
the pew during Mass and spaced off during the Liturgy of the Word? Next time
you go to Mass, find the Sunday readings, either online or in your parish
missal. Spend time reading, reflecting, responding, contemplating and acting
on the Scripture passages then ask yourself how the Gospel message applies
to your life today.
4 Respond during the dismissal. Just as the door of the Church
holds a special significance as the entrance point, the dismissal at the end
of the liturgy holds a special message of our missionary call as Catholics.
The Mass is an incredible prayer in the Catholic faith - but it's also a school.
It a 'boot camp' of holiness whose goal is to make perfect men, women, and
children - saints. The next time you go to Mass, hear the final words of dismissal
for what they truly are - a command to get out into the world and spread the
news of Christ and His bride, the Catholic Church.
SAY THE NICEST THINGS
One
day, a teacher asked her students to list the names of the other students
in the room on two sheets of paper, leaving a space between each name. Then
she told them to think of the nicest thing they could say about each of their
classmates and write it down. It took the remainder of the class period to
finish their assignment and as the students left the room, each one handed
in the papers. That Saturday, the teacher wrote down the name of each student
on a separate sheet of paper and listed what everyone else had said about
that individual. On Monday, she gave each student his or her list. Before
long, the entire class was smiling. "Really?" she heard whispered.
"I never knew that I meant anything to anyone!" and "I didn't
know others liked me so much" were most of the comments. No one ever
mentioned those papers in class again. She never knew if they discussed them
after class or with their parents but it didn't matter. The exercise had accomplished
its purpose. The students were happy with themselves and one another. That
group of students moved on. Several years later, one of the students was killed
in Vietnam and his teacher attended the funeral of that special student. She
had never seen a serviceman in a military coffin before. He looked so handsome,
so mature. The Church was packed with his friends. One by one, those who loved
him took a last walk by the coffin. The teacher was the last one to bless
the coffin. As she stood there, one of the soldiers who acted as pallbearer
came up to her. "Were you Mark's maths teacher?" he asked. She nodded
"Yes". Then he said "Mark talked about you a lot". After
the funeral, most of Mark's former classmates went together to a lunch. Mark's
mother and father were there, obviously waiting to speak with his teacher.
"We want to show you something" his father said, taking a wallet
out of his pocket. "They found this on Mark when he was killed. We thought
you might recognise it". Opening the wallet, he carefully removed two
worn pieces of notebook paper that had obviously been taped, folded and refolded
many times. The teacher knew without looking that the papers were the ones
on which she had listed all the good things each of Mark's classmates had
said about him. "Thank you so much for doing that" Mark's mother
said. "As you can see, Mark treasured it". All of Mark's former
classmates started to gather around. Charlie smiled rather sheepishly and
said "I still have my list. It's in the top drawer of my desk at home".
Stephen's wife said "Stephen asked me to put his in our wedding album".
"I have mine too" Marilyn said. "It's in my diary". Then
Vicki, another classmate, reached into her pocketbook, took out her wallet
and showed her worn and frazzled list to the group. "I carry this with
me at all times" Vicki said and without batting an eyelash, she continued
"I think we all saved our lists". That's when the teacher finally
sat down and cried. She cried for Mark and for all his friends who would never
see him again. Sometimes, we forget that life will end one day - and we don't
know when that one day will be. So please, tell the people you love and care
for, that they are special and important. Tell them, before it is too late.
JUST FOR A LAUGH…
At Saint Peter's Catholic Church in Ardrossan, they have weekly husbands'
marriage seminars. At the session last week, the priest asked Giuseppe, who
said he was approaching his fiftieth wedding anniversary, to take a few minutes
and share some insight into how he had managed to stay married to the same
woman all these years. Giuseppe replied to the assembled husbands "Wella,
I'va tried to treat her nicea, spenda da money on her but besta of all is,
I tooka her to Italy for the twenty-fifth anniversary!" The priest responded
"Giuseppe, you are an amazing inspiration to all the husbands here! Please
tell us what you are planning for your wife for your fiftieth anniversary?"
Giuseppe proudly replied "I gonna go pick her up".
WISH YOU WERE HERE - HOLY SPIRIT NOVENA
In that first moment when you settle into your seat waiting for Mass to begin,
who is it that you think of? Who is it that you wish were sitting beside you?
After my mother died, it was difficult to come to Church without welling up
in tears as I wished she were there. Then one day I asked God to show me that
she was with him and I experienced a sense of peace. Now my heart aches for
those I care about who have stopped coming to Church. Perhaps they have drifted
away or something has turned them away. Whatever the situation, I miss them
and wish they were here. If, like me, you still have hope for the people you
wish were sitting with you in Church, please pledge to pray for them between
the Ascension Thursday and Pentecost Sunday. On Ascension Day, we will distribute
prayer cards with the Prayer to the Holy Spirit.
POPE FRANCIS MISSION PRAYER FOR MAY
Pope Francis's mission prayer for May is for the Mission of the Laity. We
pray that the lay faithful may fulfil their specific mission, by responding
with creativity to the challenges that face the world today.

CALLING ALL RETIRED HEAD TEACHERS
The Association of Catholic Head Teachers, Diocese of Galloway, is holding
its annual meeting, Mass and meal with Bishop
Nolan on Tuesday 22 May 2018 in St Joseph's Church, 15 Hill Street, Kilmarnock,
KA3 1HA. As this is a very special year commemorating 100 years of the Education
(Scotland) Act, we would like to extend an invitation to all retired head
teachers to join us for the full event. The day begins with tea and coffee
and light lunch at 12.45pm followed by our guest speaker. Mass is at 4.00pm
followed by a meal in the Park Hotel, Kilmarnock at 5.30pm. If you would like

PENTECOST BRUNCH
There will be a Sunday brunch after Mass on Sunday 20 May from 11.30am to
1.00pm in the Parish Centre. There will be soup, rolls and sausage and bacon

FUN RUN

West Coast Furniture Bank is based in the former ICI Nylon Plant in Stevenston.

During the 10.30 am Holy Mass outwith holidays, there is a Children’s Liturgy
provided for preschool children, children in Primaries 1 to 3 and a Sacramental
Programme for children in Primary 4. After the 10.30 am Holy Mass, tea, coffee
cakes and buns are available in the Parish Centre. At both of our weekend
Holy Masses, we have a second collection for Church maintenance.
