GRUMPY OLD MAN
When an old man died in the geriatric ward of a nursing home, it was believed that he had nothing left of any value. Later, when the nurses were going through his meagre possessions, they found this poem. Its quality and content so impressed the staff that copies were made and distributed to every nurse in the hospital.
What do you see nurses - what do you see?
What are you thinking when looking at me?
A grumpy old man - not very wise
Uncertain of habit with faraway eyes?
Who dribbles his food and makes no reply
When you say in a loud voice - I wish you'd try!
Who seems not to notice the things that you do
And forever is losing a sock or shoe?
Who, resisting or not lets you do as you will
With bathing and feeding - the long day to fill?
What are you're thinking - is that what you see?
Then open your eyes - you're not looking at me
I'll tell you who I am as I sit here so still
As I do at your bidding, as I eat at your will
I'm a small child of ten with a father and mother
Brothers and sisters who love one another
A young boy of sixteen with wings on his feet
Dreaming that soon now a lover he'll meet
A groom soon at twenty - my heart gives a leap
Remembering the vows that I promised to keep
At twenty-five, now, I have young of my own
Who need me to guide and give a secure home
A man of thirty - my young now grown fast
Bound to each other with ties that should last
At forty, my young sons have grown and gone,
But my wife's beside me to see I don't mourn
At fifty, once more babies play round my knee
Again, we know children - my loved one and me
Dark days are upon me - my wife is now dead
I look at the future and shudder with dread
For my sons are all rearing young of their own
And I think of the years - the love that I've known
I'm now an old man and nature is cruel
'Tis jest to make old age look like a fool
The body, it crumbles - grace and vigour depart
There is now a stone where I once had a heart
But inside this old body still a youth still dwells
And now and again my battered heart swells
I remember the joys - I remember the pain
And I'm loving and living life over again
I think of the years, all too few - gone too fast
And accept the stark fact that nothing can last
So open your eyes, people - open and see
Not a grumpy old man - look closer - see ME!!
Remember this poem when you next meet an older person without looking at the young soul within. We will all, one day, be there, too! The best and most beautiful things of this world can't be seen or touched. They must be felt by the heart.

JUST FOR A LAUGH …
A priest, a cantor and a parishioner from Saint Peter's were on a mission trip to the jungles of South American when their plane went down. All three survived the crash but were immediately surrounded and captured by a group of bandits. The leader of the group said "I'm going to shoot all three of you - but, before I shoot you, I'm going to give you one last request." He turned to the priest and said to him "What is your request?" He replied "I have one sermon I have preached all over the world. Wherever I go, people ask me to preach that sermon. It takes one hour to deliver it. I'd like to preach that sermon one last time." The leader of the bandits said "Your request will be granted." He turned to the cantor and said "What is your request?" The cantor said "I am a great singer. I'm in demand all over the world. My favourite oratorio is Elijah. It takes me one hour to sing all the solo parts to Elijah. I'd like to sing that oratorio one last time." Again, the leader of the bandits said "Your request will be granted." He then turned to the parishioner and asked "What is your request?" He replied "I've heard both the sermon and the solo. Shoot me first."

POPE FRANCIS' PRAYER INTENTION FOR AUGUST
Pope Francis' Prayer for August is for the treasure of families - that any far-reaching decisions of economists and politicians may protect the family as one of the treasures of humanity.

SATAN'S GARAGE SALE
Once upon a time, Satan was having a garage sale. There, standing in little groups were all of his bright, shiny trinkets. Here were tools that make it easy to tear others down for use as stepping-stones - and over there were some lenses for magnifying one's own importance, which, if you looked through them the other way, you could also use to belittle others or even one's self. Against the wall was the usual assortment of gardening implements guaranteed to help your pride grow by leaps and bounds - the rake of scorn, the shovel of jealousy for digging a pit for your neighbour, the tools of gossip and backbiting, of selfishness and apathy. All of these were pleasing to the eye and came complete with fabulous promises and guarantees of prosperity. Prices, of course, were steep - but not to worry! Free credit was extended to one and all. "Take it home, use it, and you won't have to pay until later!" old Satan cried as he hawked his wares. The visitor, as he browsed, noticed two well worn, non-descript tools standing in one corner. Not being nearly as tempting as the other items, he found it curious that these two tools had price tags higher than any other. When he asked why, Satan just laughed and said "Well, that's because I use them so much. If they weren't so plain looking, people might see them for what they were." Satan pointed to the two tools, saying "You see, that one's Doubt and that one's Discouragement -- and those will work when nothing else will."

WHY GO TO CHURCH?
If anyone asks you - Why go to Church?, then tell them this. In the Creed, we pray that we believe in Jesus Christ. Jesus stands at the door of our lives. He stands there, lingering, waiting for us to be ready and open the door and let him in. He waits more urgently than you for the door to be opened. You are a thousand times more necessary to him than he is to you. People often claim that they believe in Jesus but it is the Church they cannot accept. His resurrection is the victory of love over hatred, of communion over betrayal and thus our story too. All the claims made for the Church in the Creed are signs that love has won the victory. To claim that the Church is Catholic is to say that we belong to each other more profoundly in Christ than we do to any nation, tribe or family.                   Father Timothy Radcliffe

MARY'S MEALS - ANNUAL RAFFLE AND TEXTILE COLLECTION
The annual raffle and textile collection for Mary's Meals will run from Saturday 18 to Sunday 19 August at 12 noon. We are currently feeding over 1.2 million children in fifteen countries across the world! Please note that we are only able to collect textiles in any condition - for example, clothes, household textiles, shoes, bags et cetera. Thank you for your continuing support of Mary's Meals and we look forward to visiting your parish.                       Mary's Meals

GIFT AID
The Inland Revenue now requires us to use a new style of Gift Aid form. These are available at the back of the Church and on the parish website. If you pay tax, please complete the new form and return it to the box provided. This allows us to provide the additional information required on the Gift Aid claim. Gift Aid is a vital source of income. All that is needed is that you pay tax. You simply declare that you give funds to the Church. We do the rest. Why not sign a form today? We get back an extra 25p for every £1 you give the Church in your weekly collection or by way of a donation. There is no need to cancel or renew it. We simply claim in the income we receive.

VISITORS
Are you visiting us for Holy Mass? Please know that you are very welcome. During the 10.30 am Holy Mass outwith holidays, there is a Children’s Liturgy provided for preschool children, children in Primaries 1 to 3 and a Sacramental Programme for children in Primary 4. After the 10.30 am Holy Mass, tea, coffee cakes and buns are available in the Parish Centre. At both of our weekend Holy Masses, we have a second collection for Church maintenance.
