A LITTLE GIRL'S FAITH IN THE EUCHARIST
A couple of months before his death, the famous Bishop Fulton J Sheen was interviewed on national television. One of the questions was this - "Bishop Sheen, you have inspired millions of people all over the world. Who inspired you? Was it a Pope?" Bishop Sheen responded that it was not a Pope, a cardinal, another bishop, or even a priest or a nun. It was a little Chinese girl of eleven years of age. He explained that when the Communists took over China they imprisoned a priest in his own rectory near the Church. After they locked him up in his own house, the priest was horrified to look out of his window and see the Communists proceed into the Church where they went into the sanctuary and broke into the tabernacle. In an act of hateful desecration, they took the ciborium and threw it on the floor with all of the Sacred Hosts spilling out. The priest knew exactly how many Hosts were in the ciborium - thirty-two. When the Communists left, they either did not notice, or didn't pay any attention to a small girl praying in the back of the Church who saw everything that had happened. That night the little girl came back. Slipping past the guard at the priest's house, she went inside the Church. There she made a holy hour of prayer, an act of love to make up for the act of hatred. After her holy hour she went into the sanctuary, knelt down and bent over, and with her tongue received Jesus in Holy Communion. The little girl continued to come back each night to make her Holy Hour and receive Jesus in Holy Communion on her tongue. On the thirty-second night, after she had consumed the last and thirty-second host, she accidentally made a noise and woke the guard who was sleeping. He ran after her, caught her, and beat her to death with the butt of his rifle. This act of heroic martyrdom was witnessed by the priest as he watched grief-stricken from his bedroom window. When Bishop Sheen heard the story, he was so inspired that he promised God he would make a holy hour of prayer before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, every day of his life. If this frail, little child could give testimony and witness to the world, concerning the real and wonderful Presence of her Saviour in the Blessed Sacrament, then Bishop Sheen was absolutely bound by all that was right and true to do the same. His sole desire from then on was to bring the world to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. The little girl showed the Bishop what true courage and zeal really is - how faith could overcome all fear, how true love for Jesus in the Eucharist, must transcend life itself.

JUST FOR A LAUGH …
A young priest who had just gone to a new Parish. His picture had been in the newspaper, in the Church bulletins and he was on television - so he thought everyone in town should know him. He went to the nursing home to visit an elderly member of his congregation. As he walked down the hall, she was sitting in a wheelchair outside her room. He walked up to her with a smile on his face, stuck out his hand and said, "Do you know who I am?" She replied "No, but if you'll ask the lady at the nurse's station, she may be able to tell you."

MOVING AWAY FROM LUKEWARM CATHOLICISM
The future of the Church can and will issue from those whose roots are deep and who live from the pure fullness of their faith. It will not issue from those who accommodate themselves merely to the passing moment, nor will it issue from those who take the easier road, who sidestep the passion of faith. The future of the Church, once again as always, will be shaped by saints, by men and women, that is, whose minds probe deeper than the slogans of the day, who see more than others see because their lives embrace a wider reality. If today we are scarcely able any longer to become aware of God, that is because we find it so easy to evade ourselves-to flee from the depths of our being by means of the narcotic of some pleasure or other. Thus our own interior depths remain closed to us. From the crisis of today the Church of tomorrow will emerge a Church that has lost much. She will become small and will have to start afresh more or less from the beginning. People in a totally planned world will find themselves unspeakably lonely. Then they will discover the little flock of believers as something wholly new. They will discover it as a hope that is meant for them, an answer for which they have always been searching in secret.                   Pope Benedict XV

POPE FRANCIS' PRAYER INTENTION FOR AUGUST
Pope Francis' Prayer for August is for the treasure of families - that any far-reaching decisions of economists and politicians may protect the family as one of the treasures of humanity.

SAINT PETER'S CAFÉ
On the first Friday of the month, after adoration and Benediction, there is the offer of tea and coffee in the Snug in the Parish Centre. This is a great initiative to bring us together for a wee chat and conversation. We can try it out this coming Friday 17 August. Everyone is welcome to come along!

COFFEE AND CAKE MORNING
The Parish Coffee and Cake Morning is the next fundraiser for the Parish Maintenance Fund. It will be held on Saturday 25 August in the Parish Centre from 10.30am to 12 noon. For more information, please phone 469006 or the Parish Office on 464063.

WHY GO TO CHURCH?
If anyone asks you - Why go to Church?, then tell them this. Perhaps the hardest claim to swallow in the Creed is that the Church is holy. It is evident that members of the Church have often been corrupt, cruel, mendacious and cowardly - but it was so from the beginning. Jesus chose as its pillars Peter who denied him and Paul who killed Jesus' disciples. This fragile and sinful community is the place in which we can all be at home. When we confess that the Church is holy, we claim that Christ's victory over sin on Easter morning cannot be undone.                    Father Timothy Radcliffe

MARY'S MEALS - ANNUAL RAFFLE AND TEXTILE COLLECTION
The annual raffle and textile collection for Mary's Meals will run from Saturday 18 to Sunday 19 August at 12 noon. Just a few bin bags filled with textiles could generate enough funds to feed a child for a whole school year - approximately £13.90. We are currently feeding over 1.2 million children in fifteen countries across the world! Please note that we are only able to collect textiles in any condition - for example, clothes, household textiles, shoes, bags et cetera. Thank you for your continuing support of Mary's Meals and we look forward to visiting your parish.                       Mary's Meals

GIFT AID
The Inland Revenue now requires us to use a new style of Gift Aid form. These are available at the back of the Church and on the parish website. If you pay tax, please complete the new form and return it to the box provided. This allows us to provide the additional information required on the Gift Aid claim. Gift Aid is a vital source of income. All that is needed is that you pay tax. You simply declare that you give funds to the Church. We do the rest. Why not sign a form today? We get back an extra 25p for every £1 you give the Church in your weekly collection or by way of a donation. There is no need to cancel or renew it. We simply claim in the income we receive.

VISITORS
Are you visiting us for Holy Mass? Please know that you are very welcome. During the 10.30 am Holy Mass outwith holidays, there is a Children’s Liturgy provided for preschool children, children in Primaries 1 to 3 and a Sacramental Programme for children in Primary 4. After the 10.30 am Holy Mass, tea, coffee cakes and buns are available in the Parish Centre. At both of our weekend Holy Masses, we have a second collection for Church maintenance.
