VOCATIONS AWARENESS WEEK
The special week for prayer for good and holy vocations begins on Sunday 9
September.
PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS
God our Father, we thank you for calling men and women to serve in your Son's
Kingdom as priests, deacons, and consecrated persons. Send your Holy Spirit
to help others to respond generously and courageously to your call. May our
community of faith support vocations of sacrificial love in our youth and
young adults. Through our Lord Jesus Christ who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen
THE FLOWING TESTIMONY OF SAINT JANUARIUS
The lives of the saints are full of similar signs - remarkable events that
remind us of God's active, personal presence in the world and his active,
personal interest in our lives. Later this month, we will celebrate the memorial
of Saint Januarius whose history gives a double reinforcement to this beautiful
truth of our faith. He was a bishop in southern Italy in a city called Benevento
and was martyred along with seven companions in the year 302. The holy bishop
risked his life to visit and encourage his fellow Christians who had been
imprisoned for their faith at the start of the Emperor Diocletian's vast and
violent persecution. He was spotted, reported and apprehended. He was interrogated,
tortured, humiliated and then thrown in prison with the rest. They were all
condemned as enemies of the state - they wouldn't worship the Roman gods -
and sentenced to be torn to pieces by wild beasts. They accepted their sentence
and stayed firm in their faith. When the animals were let into the arena,
much to the shock and disappointment of the crowd who had gathered to enjoy
the spectacle, the beasts sat calmly on their haunches, entirely uninterested
in the free lunch. The guards were unable to stimulate their appetite. Finally
the governor had to have the saints beheaded. It seems that some of the bishop's
blood was preserved as a relic by the local Christians. That very blood, still
preserved in a coagulated state in a transparent reliquary, liquefies each
year on his feast day. It has done so at least for the last five hundred years,
the recorded history of the miracle. Januarius's faithfulness under fire was
the first sign that God was with him and the yearly liquefaction is, as it
were, an annual reminder of the supernatural source of his courage. It's as
if God is determined not to let us forget about his tireless action in the
world.
JUST FOR A LAUGH…
A priest was accustomed to ending his sermons with a question and answer time.
He wanted to make sure he had not left an important question unanswered with
his congregation. One Sunday, a bright-eyed young lady sat on the front row
listening eagerly to every word he spoke. When he asked if there were any
questions, her hand shot straight up. "How did Jonah survive three days
and three nights in the belly of the whale?" she asked. The priest responded
"I don't know. But, when I get to heaven I will ask him." She responded
"But, suppose he's not in heaven?" The priest then replied "In
that case, you ask him."

IN AND AROUND THE CHURCH
Problems with the lights in the Sacristy have been fixed. The repainting of
the lampposts in the car park has now been completed with an ingenious device
to reach high places. This week, a repair will be made to the Baptismal Font
and a piece of the Church carpet will be replaced. Various design improvements
will be happening in the foyer of the Parish Centre - have a look! The lettering
engraved on the altar in the sanctuary will be renewed in the next couple
of weeks. Sincere thanks for all the tremendous support and generosity!
DATA PROTECTION
Since May, there are new Data Protection Regulations throughout Scotland,
which also affect parishes. For example, if you are writing in the Petitions
Book at the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, make sure you do not give too much personal
information about someone you are praying for. and if you want to add someone's
name to the List of the Sick, if you can, please make sure it is okay with
them first. Thank you!
GIFT AID
The Inland Revenue now requires us to use a new style of Gift
Aid form. These are available at the back of the Church and on the parish
website. If you pay tax, please complete the new form and return it to the
box provided. This allows us to provide the additional information required
on the Gift Aid claim. Gift Aid is a vital source of income. All that is needed
is that you pay tax. You simply declare that you give funds to the Church.
We do the rest. Why not sign a form today? We get back an extra 25p for every
£1 you give the Church in your weekly collection or by way of a donation.
There is no need to cancel or renew it. We simply claim in the income we receive.
VISITORS
Are you visiting us for Holy Mass? Please know that you are very welcome.
During the 10.30 am Holy Mass outwith holidays, there is a Children’s Liturgy
provided for preschool children, children in Primaries 1 to 3 and a Sacramental
Programme for children in Primary 4. After the 10.30 am Holy Mass, tea, coffee

Holy Masses, we have a second collection for Church maintenance.
