PRAYER
OF THOMAS MERTON
My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead
of me. I cannot know for certain where it will end, nor do I really know myself
and the fact that I think that I am following your will does not mean that
I am actually doing so. But I believe that the desire to please you does in
fact please you. And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing. I hope
that I will never do anything apart from that desire. And I know that if I
do this you will lead me by the right road though I may know nothing about
it. Therefore, will I trust you always though I may seem to be lost and in
the shadow of death. I will not fear for you are ever with me and you will
never leave me to face my perils alone.
A STRANGER IN THE HOUSE
A few years after I was born, my Dad met a stranger who was new to our small
town. From the beginning, Dad was fascinated with this enchanting newcomer
and soon invited him to come live with us. The stranger was quickly accepted
by the family and was around from then on. As I grew up, I never questioned
his place in our family because, in my mind, he always had his special niche.
My parents were wonderful teachers. Mum taught me good from evil and Dad taught
me to be obedient and loving. But the stranger - O, he was the storyteller
and he kept us spellbound for hours on end with adventures, mysteries and
comedies. While Dad ruled our family with basic moral convictions, the stranger
never felt obligated to honour them. Profanity, for example, was not allowed
in our home, not from us, our friends or any visitors. Our long time stranger,
however, got away with four-letter words that burned my ears and made my Dad
squirm and my mother blush. My Dad didn't permit the irresponsible use of
alcohol but our stranger encouraged us to try it on a regular basis. He made
cigarettes look cool, cigars manly, sex recreation and pipes distinguished.
He never stopped talking about sex and dirty politics. His comments were often
blatant, sometimes suggestive, and generally embarrassing. I know now that
my early concepts about relationships were influenced strongly by this stranger
in the family. Time and time again, he opposed the values of my parents yet
he was seldom rebuked and was never asked to leave. More than fifty years
have passed since the stranger moved in with our family. He has blended right
in and is not nearly as fascinating as he was at first. Still, if you could
walk into my parents' den today, you would still find him sitting over in
his corner, waiting for someone to listen to him and watch him draw his pictures.
His name? Well, we just call him TV.
With
thanks to Bill Andrew for the story
JUST FOR A LAUGH…
• A friend was in front of me coming out of Church one day and the Parish
Priest was standing at the door as he always is to shake hands. He grabbed
my friend by the hand and pulled him aside. The priest said to him "You
need to join the Army of the Lord!" My friend replied "I'm already
in the Army of the Lord, Father." The priest questioned "How come
I don't see you except at Christmas and Easter?" He whispered back"I'm
in the secret service."
• Three priests were having lunch in a restaurant. One said "You know,
since summer started, I've been having trouble with bats in my loft and attic
at Church. I've tried everything - noise, spray, cats - but nothing seems
to scare them away. Another said "Yea, me too. I've got hundreds living
in my belfry and in the narthex attic. I've even had the place fumigated and
they won't go away." The third said "I baptised all mine and confirmed
them ... and haven't seen one back since!!!"
FORMATION FOR MINISTRY GROUP
The next Meeting of the Formation for Ministry Group from Embracing Change
will be on Tuesday 15 January at 7.00 pm in the Presbytery. The Group will
be finalising an Oasis Day for Parish Readers next month.
JUSTICE AND PEACE SCOTLAND LETTER
Please make sure you get your copy of Bishop
Nolan's Letter for the Day of Prayer for Peace. It takes up the theme
of political engagement, inspired by Pope
Francis' own Letter for Peace. The Letter will be handed out at the end
of Masses this weekend.
BURNS SUPPERETTE
Instead of the traditional Burns Supper, this year we are having a Burns
Supperette in the Parish Centre on Saturday
9 February at 7.00pm. This is a mini Burns Supper with fewer speeches and
more music. As always, there will be a light-hearted approach. Father
Duncan will welcome and thank the guests. Ciaran Sinclair will
sing after piping in the haggis pie which will be addressed by Bill Andrew.
Kandy Bar haggis pies with tattie and neeps, followed by trifle, will be served.
A vegetarian option is available on request. Fiona McLachlan will accompany
the singing of Aidan McGrath, Laura McGee, Patrick McLaughlin and Anya Tolland.
The event will be chaired by George McGrattan who will deliver a short Immortal
Memory and sing with Michael McCulloch. Tickets cost £7.50 and can be
reserved by phoning the Parish Office on 464063. We would like to know the
number to be catered for as soon as possible.
BURNS PASCOLI SUPPER
Club Cuore Cardosini presents a Burns Pascoli Supper on Saturday 26 January
2019 at 7.00pm for 7.30pm. Tickets cost £18 and can be bought from the
Parish Office on 464063. There will be music from Paulo and Angela and all
proceeds will be divided between the Ayrshire Hospice and Misericordia di
Gallicono, victims of the Amatrice earthquake. All are welcome.

FINANCES
Bankers Orders for the Parish and Parish Centre amount to £3500 per
month. We are grateful for your generous support in collections. If you can
manage a little more from time to time, it would be a great help. A Standing
Order would make the handling of money so much easier. Have you signed a Gift
Aid form? If you are a taxpayer the Church would get 25p added to every £1
you donate.
COLLECTIONS
Last weekend's Offertory collection amounted to £669.71 and the Maintenance
Fund collection to £298.58 - thanks.
SUNDAY TEAS
Tea and coffee will be served after the 10.30am Mass next Sunday in the Parish
Centre by Jennifer's and Niamh's team.
GIFT AID
The Inland Revenue now requires us to use a new style of Gift
Aid form. These are available at the back of the Church and on the parish
website. If you pay tax, please complete the new form and return it to the
box provided. This allows us to provide the additional information required
on the Gift Aid claim. Gift Aid is a vital source of income. All that is needed
is that you pay tax. You simply declare that you give funds to the Church.
We do the rest. Why not sign a form today? We get back an extra 25p for every
£1 you give the Church in your weekly collection or by way of a donation.
There is no need to cancel or renew it. We simply claim in the income we receive.
VISITORS
Are you visiting us for Holy Mass? Please know that you are very welcome.
During the 10.30 am Holy Mass outwith holidays, there is a Children’s Liturgy
provided for preschool children, children in Primaries 1 to 3 and a Sacramental
Programme for children in Primary 4. After the 10.30 am Holy Mass, tea, coffee
cakes and buns are available in the Parish Centre. At both of our weekend
Holy Masses, we have a second collection for Church maintenance.
ADVERTISER SUPPORT
Our advertisers would welcome your support. We are grateful for their continuing
sponsorship. We are grateful for the support of Mr and Mrs Sohal, Nisa Stores,
Glasgow Street for the weekly donation of tea, coffee and milk for the Sunday
teas.
