SAINT VALENTINE'S STORY
Let
me introduce myself. My name is Valentine. I lived in Rome during the third
century. That was long, long ago! At that time, Rome was ruled by an emperor
named Claudius. I didn't like Emperor Claudius and I wasn't the only one!
A lot of people shared my feelings. Claudius wanted to have a big army. He
expected men to volunteer to join. Many men just did not want to fight in
wars. They did not want to leave their wives and families. As you might have
guessed, not many men signed up. This made Claudius furious. So what happened?
He had a crazy idea. He thought that if men were not married, they would have
nothing to stop them joining the army. So Claudius decided not to allow any
more marriages. Christians knew that marriage is the sign of Christ's faithfulness
in love. I thought it was preposterous! I certainly wasn't going to support
that law! Did I mention that I was a priest? One of the most beautiful and
privileged parts of my ministry was to marry couples. Even after Emperor Claudius
passed his law, I kept on performing marriage ceremonies - secretly, of course.
Imagine a small candlelight room with only the bride and groom and myself.
We would whisper the words of the ceremony, listening all the while for the
steps of soldiers. One night, we did hear footsteps. It was scary! Thank goodness
the couple I was marrying escaped just in time. I was caught. I was not quite
as light on my feet as I used to be, I suppose. I was thrown in jail and told
that my punishment was death. I tried to stay cheerful. And do you know what?
Wonderful things happened. Many young people came to the jail to visit me.
They threw flowers and notes up to my window. They wanted me to know that
they, too, believed in the power of love. One of these young people was the
daughter of the prison guard. Her father allowed her to visit me in the cell.
Sometimes we would sit and talk for hours. She helped me to keep my spirits
up and never to doubt. She agreed that I did the right thing by ignoring the
Emperor and going ahead with the secret marriages. On the day I was to die,
I left my friend a little note thanking her for her friendship and her loyalty.
I signed it "Love from your Valentine." I believe that note started
the custom of exchanging love messages on Valentine's Day. It was written
on the day I died, 14 February 269 Anno Domini. Now, every year on this day,
people remember. But most importantly, they think about love and commitment,
friendship and sacrifice. And when they think of Emperor Claudius, they remember
how he tried to stand in the way of love, and they laugh - because they know
that love can't be beaten! The power of love will never end. May the Good
Lord bless you all today! Your
Saint Valentine
JUST FOR A LAUGH…
A priest was completing a sermon on moderation and abstinence. With great
expression he said "If I had all the beer in the world, I'd take it and
throw it into the river." With even greater emphasis he said "And
if I had all the wine in the world, I'd take it and throw it into the river."
And then finally, he said "And if I had all the whisky in the world,
I'd take it and throw it into the river." Then he sat down at the end
of his sermon. The song leader then stood very cautiously and announced with
a smile "For our offertory hymn, let us sing hymn number 365 - Shall
We Gather at the River.
BURNS SUPPERETTE THANKS
We would like to offer great thanks and appreciation to George McGrattan,
Margaret Sweircz, Bill Andrew, all the wonderful singers and musicians and
all those who helped make our first Burns
Supperette a fantastic evening. Bill Andrew, who for
the past ten years has recited the Address to a Haggis at
our Burns
Suppers composed a poem called Address
to a Haggis Pie. It is reproduced below.
Whaur
is yer honest sonsie face, O dearie me, O my, O my
A
bonnie big haggis you are no' so how can I address a haggis pie.
Wid
Rabbie eat a haggis pie - naw - so why are you here in this place
Awa'
back tae the Kandy Bar for you're no' wan o the puddin' race
A
real Haggis I've addressed before but I'm no so sure that I am able
To
address that wee sleekit, scunnering pie thing, sitting on this table
Father
Duncan's asked me tae dae it so I'll need tae gie it a try
But
a man like me shouldnae have tae gie an address tae a haggis pie
Did
ye mibbee come frae Lothian's butcher's shoap
Ye
jist look like a tattie scone wae some mince on the toap
Wae
horns, tatties an' tumshie, this great big pie dish ye fill
But
it looks as if ye've jist blew doon frae the tap o the Cannon Hill
But
wee Haggis Pie, I jist have to say, ye've no got a very braw face
For
your no a real haggis - imposter - you're jist a blooming disgrace
Now
I dinna want to gie ye grief or to make too much o' a fuss.
But
it looks like ye've jee'st fallen aff the back o' an A1 bus
A
bonnie big haggis wae tatties and turnip is really a much nicer feast
Black
puddin', tripe, clootie dumpling but no this wee horrrible beast
It's
no your fault, to be honest but ye really shouldnae be here
Ye
see, this Burns Supperette was George McGrattan's big idea
So
sorry wee pie, I've been telling a lie, I've ate one of your kind before
I
ate a haggis pie supper from the chip van that sits doon the shore
So
lasses and lads, I've been kidding ye on, I've really been telling a lie
So
glasses we'll raise to join in the praise o' this humble wee haggis pie

INDEPENDENT REVIEW OF SAFEGUARDING PRACTICE WITHIN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH IN
SCOTLAND
Following the implementation of 'In God's Image', Safeguarding in the Catholic
Church in Scotland in May 2018, a process of independently scrutinising the
impact on the leadership culture and safeguarding practice at a Diocesan level
was also established. This year, our Diocese has been chosen and will be reviewed
by an external audit team from the Social Care Institute for Excellence and
Children in Scotland from 19 to 21 February. The audit will include the opportunity
for anyone who has disclosed abuse, shared concerns of unsafe people or practice
or asked for help to keep safe for any reason to speak to the audit team.
The audit team wants to hear how people in Diocesan roles have responded.
They are interested also to hear from survivors of non-recent Church-related
abuse, their families and friends, about the response they have received or
what may have prevented them from coming forward in the past. Should you wish
to meet members of the audit team and receive the formal consent documentation
you can contact the Diocesan Office, 8 Corsehill Road, Ayr KA7 2ST. The telephone
number is 01292 266750 and the email address of the Diocesan Safeguarding
Adviser is Safeguarding@GallowayDiocese.org.uk. You can now make contact directly
with the audit team, via the email address should this be preferable to a
request being made via the Diocese. Please make this information known in
the parishes. Direct Contact email address for the Audit Team is LearningTogether@scie.org.uk.
OUR CLEANERS NEED SOME HELP
We are asking able-bodied parishioners - men and women - to help to keep God's
House clean and tidy and to support our wonderful team of cleaners. If you
can help in any way, please let us know. Thank you! Cleaning is usually on
Tuesdays after Holy Mass.
HOSPITAL CHAPLAINCY
If a member of your family or a friend is sick, please let us know and give
us the details. Deacon Bill Corbett (01292 521208, 07904 248948, Rev.BillCorbett@btinternet.com)
is the chaplain to Crosshouse Hospital and is assisted by the priest on call
each week.
FINANCES
Bankers Orders for the Parish and Parish Centre amount to £3500 per
month. We are grateful for your generous support in collections. If you can
manage a little more from time to time, it would be a great help. A Standing
Order would make the handling of money so much easier. Have you signed a Gift
Aid form? If you are a taxpayer the Church would get 25p added to every £1
you donate.
COLLECTIONS
Last weekend's Offertory collection amounted to £602.67 and the Maintenance
Fund collection to £251.36 - thanks.
SUNDAY TEAS
Tea and coffee will be served after the 10.30am Mass next Sunday in the Parish
Centre by Jennifer's and Niamh's team.
GIFT AID
The Inland Revenue now requires us to use a new style of Gift
Aid form. These are available at the back of the Church and on the parish
website. If you pay tax, please complete the new form and return it to the
box provided. This allows us to provide the additional information required
on the Gift Aid claim. Gift Aid is a vital source of income. All that is needed
is that you pay tax. You simply declare that you give funds to the Church.
We do the rest. Why not sign a form today? We get back an extra 25p for every
£1 you give the Church in your weekly collection or by way of a donation.
There is no need to cancel or renew it. We simply claim in the income we receive.
VISITORS
Are you visiting us for Holy Mass? Please know that you are very welcome.
During the 10.30 am Holy Mass outwith holidays, there is a Children’s Liturgy
provided for preschool children, children in Primaries 1 to 3 and a Sacramental
Programme for children in Primary 4. After the 10.30 am Holy Mass, tea, coffee
cakes and buns are available in the Parish Centre. At both of our weekend
Holy Masses, we have a second collection for Church maintenance.
ADVERTISER SUPPORT
Our advertisers would welcome your support. We are grateful for their continuing
sponsorship. We are grateful for the support of Mr and Mrs Sohal, Nisa Stores,
Glasgow Street for the weekly donation of tea, coffee and milk for the Sunday
teas.
