SPECIAL MASS AT SAINT JOHN'S TOWER, AYR
Bishop Nolan will celebrate Mass on 24 June at
7.00pm in the grounds of Saint John's Tower in Ayr to mark the Solemnity. The tower is all that remains of Ayr's original parish church, which was dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, the patron saint of Ayr. The Church was built in the late twelfth century. The building, however, is not specifically mentioned in documents until 1233. Notable visitors to the Church include Robert the Bruce, who held Parliament at the Church in April 1315, James IV, who made numerous offerings for Masses to be said in Saint John's and possibly Mary Queen of Scots, who is said to have 'supped and slept at Saint John's in Ayr', although this may be a reference to the town rather than the church. Saint John's was Roman Catholic until 1560 when it became a Reformed Church, under an Act of Parliament, after John Knox led the Protestant Reformation in Scotland. John Knox is known to have preached in Ayr, having had strong links with Ayrshire. His second wife came from Ochiltree.

ANNUAL PILGRIMAGE TO SAINT NINIAN'S CAVE
Sunday 25 August is a date for your diary. Mass at Saint Ninian's Cave will be celbrated at 4.00pm. We will be organising a coach from our parish and Saint Mary's Church, Largs.

OUR PARISH FEAST DAY
Our Parish Feast Day this year will be on the weekend of 29 and 30 June. We ask the Good Lord to bless all our parishioners in a special way and we pray for all our deceased parishioners. Fiona will bake the traditional Lammas Bread that is blessed and distributed on the Feast of Saint Peter.

SHAMROCKS, THE SUN AND ROSES
The shamrock, a kind of clover, is a leguminous herb that grows in marshy places. Saint Patrick, the missionary patron saint of Ireland, used the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity. The story goes that one day his friends asked Patrick to explain the mystery of the Trinity. He looked at the ground and saw shamrocks growing amid the grass at his feet. He picked one up one of its trifoliate leaves and asked if it were one leaf or three. Patrick's friends couldn't answer - the shamrock leaf looked like one, but it clearly had three parts. Patrick explained to them "The mystery of the Holy Trinity - one God in three persons, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit - is like this but more complex and unintelligible." Saint Cyril, the teacher of the Slavs, tried to explain the mystery of the Most Holy Trinity using sun as an example. He said "God the Father is that blazing sun. God the Son is its light and God the Holy Spirit is its heat - but there is only one sun. So, there are three Persons in Holy Trinity, but God is One and indivisible." St. John Maria Vianney used to explain Holy Trinity using roses on the altar. "The rose has colour, fragrance and shape. But these are expressions of one reality, namely, the single rose. There is also a very old and much-repeated story about Saint Augustine, one of the intellectual giants of the Church. He was walking by the seashore one day, attempting to conceive of an intelligible explanation for the mystery of the Trinity. As he walked along, he saw a small boy on the beach, pouring seawater from a shell into a small hole in the sand. "What are you doing, my child?" asked Augustine. "I am trying to empty the sea into this hole" the boy answered with an innocent smile. "But that is impossible, my dear child" said Augustine. The boy stood up, looked straight into the eyes of Augustine and replied "What you are trying to do - comprehend the immensity of God - is even more impossible." Then he vanished. The child was an angel sent by God to teach Augustine a lesson. Later, Augustine wrote "You see the Trinity if you see love." According to him, the Father is the lover, the Son is the loved one and the Holy Spirit is the personification of the very act of loving. This means that we can understand something of the mystery of the Holy Trinity more readily with the heart than with our feeble mind. Evagrius of Pontus, a Greek monk of the 4th century who came from what is now Turkey in Asia and later lived out his vocation in Egypt, said"God cannot be grasped by the mind. If God could be grasped, God would not be God."

JUST FOR A LAUGH
• After the Baptism of his baby brother in church, Jason sobbed all the way home in the car. His father asked him three times what was wrong. Finally, the boy replied "That priest said he wanted us brought up in a Christian home and I want to stay with you."
• A primary school teacher asked her class "What was Jesus' Mother's name?" One child answered, "Mary." The teacher then asked, "Who knows what Jesus' stepfather's name was?" A little boy said "Verge." Confused, the teacher asked, "Where did you get that?" The boy said, "Well, you know they are always talking about Verge 'n' Mary.

CALLING ALL OUR PARISH EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS
Our annual day for Eucharistic Ministers in our Deanery is coming soon on Saturday 22 June 2019 from 12 noon until 3.45pm. Refreshemtns will be served. The themes will include the Parish being 'grounded in the Eucharist' and 'rediscovering the sense of the Sacred'. Leaflets for Eucharistic Ministers are available in the sacristy. Please inform
Father Duncan that you will be there for catering and organisational purposes. Thanks!

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY
Happy Fathers' Day t
o those who are fathers with children of their own, to those who are fathers as they step into the role for children not their own such as stepfathers, grandfathers, uncles, brother and foster dads, to those who are grieving the loss of a father, navigating a tense relationship with their father or living life with an absentee father, to those who want to be fathers but is not their reality in their lives yet and all our spiritual fathers. No matter where you are in the journey of fatherhood, you are seen, loved and valued especially by God, who is father to all. Today we honour those fathers who have shown us something of God's love and remember that our father in heaven loves us.

QUESTION OF GENDER - MALE AND FEMALE HE CREATED THEM
The Vatican questions gender ideology in a new document for parents and educators. It's called Male And Female He Created Them. Toward A Path Of Dialogue On The Question Of Gender Theory In Education. It insists you cannot leave male or female identity in the hands of subjectivity. The document says that presenting 'a society without sexual differences' is unrealistic and has no biological basis. It also warns that 'the utopia of the neuter' destroys the concept of family. In a mother-father family children 'learn how to recognise the value and beauty of the differences between the two sexes' leading to his or her understanding of his or her own identity. The text calls on Catholic educators and universities to be well-prepared in this field. Likewise, it launches a call for governmental reflection. It says that a democratic state cannot reduce the range of educational to a single school of thought which is concerned on one hand with the fundamentals of human nature and on the other with natural rights of parents to freely choose any education that agrees with the dignity of the human person.

KNIT AND KNATTER GROUP
The last Knit and Knatter meeting before stopping for the summer will be in the Lauriston Hotel, Ardrossan, on Wednesday 26 June 2019 at 12.30pm for 1.00pm. We will start back again on Wednesday 7 August 2019 at 1.00pm. We hope you all have a lovely summer!

THANKS
Rena Fitzpatrick is very grateful for all the Mass cards, prayers, flowers and cards received after her stay in hospital. Holy Mass will be offered for the intentions of all.

COME AND JOIN THE ADVENTURE OF A LIFETIME
A new initiative at Saint Peter's is to try and get our young adults together for a regular meeting and service in the parish. Maureen and Anne McGuire will be supporting the initiative. The first, informal get-together will be on the parish Feast Day, Sunday 30 June after Holy Mass. Spread the word!

REFURBISHMENT OF THE CHURCH ORGAN
Saint Peter's has a very fine organ, called a Walker Organ. It desperately needs a complete refurbishment and repair. At the moment, it is not working. The costs are extensive and will include an entire month of work. The estimate is around £9000. If any parishioner would like to make a special contribution to the Church organ, please add it to the second collection at the weekend Masses or hand it in to
Father Duncan or the Parish Office, marked Organ Collection. Thank you in anticipation for all your support and generosity.

COLLECTIONS
Last weekend's Offertory collection amounted to £611.91 and the Maintenance Fund collection to £268.85 - thanks very much.
The Organ Fund stands at £1600.00 - thank you!

GIFT AID
The updated new Gift Aid Forms have been sent to parishioners that will require them. Please send them back as soon as you can in the stamped-addressed envelope provided. Thank you so much for your support and help.

SPONSORED CYCLE AROUND MILLPORT
Ami Paterson and Lucy Skene have organised a Sponsored Cycle around Millport on 18 July to raise funds for the refurbishment of our Church organ. Sponsor Sheets are available this weekend. Please support this great initiative from our young people.

NEW EMAIL ADDRESSES
To comply with the recent changes to Data Protection Act, Saint Peter's has two new email addresses. If you are contacting the Parish Office, please use Ardrossan@GallowayDiocese.org.uk. If you wish to contact Father Duncan personally, then use Duncan.McVicar@GallowayDiocese.org.uk - thanks!

HOSPITAL CHAPLAINCY
If a member of your family or a friend is sick, please let us know and give us the details. Deacon Bill Corbett (01292 521208, 07904 248948, Rev.BillCorbett@btinternet.com) is the chaplain to Crosshouse Hospital and is assisted by the priest on call each week.

FINANCES
Bankers Orders for the Parish and Parish Centre amount to £3500 per month. We are grateful for your generous support in collections. If you can manage a little more from time to time, it would be a great help. A Standing Order would make the handling of money so much easier. Have you signed a Gift Aid form? If you are a taxpayer the Church would get 25p added to every £1 you donate.

SUNDAY TEAS
Tea and coffee will
be served after the 10.30am Mass next Sunday in the Parish Centre by Sharon McLaughlin's team.

VISITORS
Are you visiting us for Holy Mass? Please know that you are very welcome. During the 10.30 am Holy Mass outwith holidays, there is a Children’s Liturgy provided for preschool children, children in Primaries 1 to 3 and a Sacramental Programme for children in Primary 4. After the 10.30am Holy Mass, tea, coffee cakes and buns are available in the Parish Centre. At both of our weekend Holy Masses, we have a second collection for Church maintenance.

ADVERTISER SUPPORT
Our advertisers would welcome your support. We are grateful for their continuing sponsorship. We are grateful for the support of Mr and Mrs Sohal, Nisa Stores, Glasgow Street for the weekly donation of tea, coffee and milk for the Sunday teas.
