OUR
LADY OF THE ROSARY ON MONDAY
The month of October is dedicated to the prayer of the Rosary. The special
Feast Day is on Monday 7 October. Please bring your own personal rosaries
to Mass and we will bless them on that special day. Just place them on the
altar as you come to Mass.
SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM
We welcome to the Family of the Church Eva Rose Murray Traynor who was baptised
on Saturday. We also welcome Logan Dooris who will be baptised this coming
Saturday by Father John Doran from Glasgow. Congratulations to all the parents
and Godparents.
DO YOU NEED SOME INNER PEACE?
Prayer is the path to inner peace. The rosary is a powerful tool to find inner
peace in today's noisy, busy world. Prayer is powerful. In the rosary, we
ponder the life of Jesus through the eyes of his Mother. The rosary will be
prayed every morning in Church before Mass at 9.35am. Come along and enter
into the experience.
POPE FRANCIS IN GUADATE ET EXSULTATE
We should not think of the devil as a myth, a representation, a symbol, a
figure of speech or an idea. This would lead us to let down our guard, grow
careless and end up more vulnerable. The devil does not need to possess us.
He poisons us with the venom of hatred, desolation, envy and vice. When we
let down our guard, he takes advantage of it to destroy our lives, our families
and our communities. Like a roaring lion, he prowls around, looking for someone
to devour. God's word invites us clearly to 'stand against the wiles of the
devil' and to 'quench all the flaming darts of the evil one'. These expressions
are not melodramatic, precisely because our path towards holiness is a constant
battle. Those who do not realise this will be prey to failure or mediocrity.
For this spiritual combat, we can count on the powerful weapons that the Lord
has given us - faith-filled prayer, meditation on the word of God, the celebration
of Mass, Eucharistic adoration, sacramental Reconciliation, works of charity,
community life and missionary outreach. If we become careless, the false promises
of evil will easily seduce us.
OUR
LADY OF THE ROSARY
October is the month to pray the rosary. Pope Saint Pius V established this
feast in 1573. The purpose was to thank God for the victory of Christians
over the Turks at Lepanto - a victory attributed to the praying of the rosary.
Clement XI extended the feast to the universal Church in 1716. The development
of the rosary has a long history. First, a practice developed of praying 150
Our Fathers in imitation of the 150 Psalms. Then there was a parallel practice
of praying 150 Hail Marys. Soon a mystery of Jesus' life was attached to each
Hail Mary. In the sixteenth century, the rosary was developed to its present
form with the 15 mysteries - joyful, sorrowful and glorious. In 2002, Blessed
Pope John Paul II added the Mysteries of Light to this devotion. The purpose
of the rosary is to help us meditate on the great mysteries of our salvation.
Pius XII called it a compendium of the gospel. The main focus is on Jesus
- his birth, life, death and resurrection. The Our Fathers remind us that
Jesus' Father is the initiator of salvation. The Hail Marys remind us to join
with Mary in contemplating these mysteries. They also make us aware that Mary
was and is intimately joined with her Son in all the mysteries of his earthly
and heavenly existence. The Glory Bes remind us that the purpose of all life
is the glory of the Blessed Trinity. The rosary appeals to many. It is simple.
The constant repetition of words helps create an atmosphere in which to contemplate
the mysteries of God. We sense that Jesus and Mary are with us in the joys
and sorrows of life. We grow in hope that God will bring us to share in the
glory of Jesus and Mary forever. Blessed Pope John Paul once wrote 'The rosary,
though clearly Marian in character, is at heart a Christ-centred prayer. It
has all the depth of the gospel message in its entirety. It is an echo of
the prayer of Mary, her perennial Magnificat for the work of the redemptive
Incarnation which began in her virginal womb. It can be said that the rosary
is, in some sense, a prayer-commentary on the final chapter of the Vatican
II Constitution Lumen Gentium, a chapter that discusses the wondrous presence
of the Mother of God in the mystery of Christ and the Church'.
JUST FOR A LAUGH

The phrase that is guaranteed to wake up any congregation - and in conclusion

Some minds are like concrete - thoroughly mixed up and permanently set.
Be ye fishers of men. You catch 'em - He'll clean 'em.
