A READING FROM THE HOLY GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MARK (Mark 4:26-34)
Jesus said to the crowds "This is what the kingdom of God is like. A
man throws seed on the land. Night and day, while he sleeps, when he is awake,
the seed is sprouting and growing - how, he does not know. Of its own accord,
the land produces first the shoot, then the ear, then the full grain in the
ear - and when the crop is ready, he loses no time. He starts to reap because
the harvest has come." He also said, "What can we say the kingdom
of God is like? What parable can we find for it? It is like a mustard seed
which at the time of its sowing in the soil is the smallest of all the seeds
on earth - yet once it is sown it grows into the biggest shrub of them all
and puts out big branches so that the birds of the air can shelter in its
shade." Using many parables like these, he spoke the word to them, so
far as they were capable of understanding it. He would not speak to them except
in parables, but he explained everything to his disciples when they were alone.
REFLECTION
From the Pastoral Letter of Bishops for Pentecost 2021 - 'Our world, God's
creation, is a precious gift to us. It is our common home entrusted to each
generation'. They go on to say "We all have a part to play, each and
every one of us, in the routines, choices and decisions of our everyday lives
and our aspirations for the future. The actions of parishes, families, schools,
and individuals will have a significant impact on our efforts to restore our
common home. There are now many resources, freely available, to advise us
on our choice of food, saving of water and electricity, suggestions about
travel, waste and re-use. These are measures that everyone can employ, in
some degree, with minimal inconvenience and change. They are effective ways
in which we can each reaffirm our personal vocation to be stewards of creation."
THE LORD'S DAY AT HOME
If you are housebound or self-isolating at this time, please use these prayers
to unite yourself with the worship of the Universal Church, and your own parish,
this Sunday. If alone, read or say these prayers quietly to yourself. If with
another, or in a family, someone should read the Gospel and others respond.
It might be suitable to find a special, quiet place at home for your Sunday
prayers.

FEED YOUR SOUL - RENEWING OUR PARISH COMMUNITIES
The first proclamation, the task of every Christian, is based on that 'go'
which Jesus gave as an instruction to his disciples and which implies going
out, making haste, accompanying, thus becoming true missionary disciples.
It cannot be reduced to the conveying of a message but is first of all sharing
the life that comes from God and communicating the joy of having met the
Lord. As Pope Benedict wrote 'Being Christian is not the result of an ethical
choice or a lofty idea but the encounter with an event, a person, which
gives life a new horizon and a decisive direction'.
PRAYER
FOR SPIRITUAL COMMUNION
My Jesus, I believe that you are present in this Holy Sacrament of the altar.
I love you above all things and I passionately desire to receive you into
my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come spiritually
into my soul so that I may unite myself wholly to you now and forever. Amen.
A
CALL FROM GOD
One Saturday night, a parish priest was working late and decided to call
the presbytery housekeeper before he left for home. It was about 10.00pm
but the housekeeper didn't answer the phone. The priest let it ring many
times. He thought it was odd that she didn't answer but decided to finish
off a few last things and try again in a few minutes. When he tried again,
she answered right away. He asked her why she hadn't answered before and
she said that it hadn't rung at the presbytery - there had been no prior
call. They both just brushed it off as a fluke and went on their merry ways.
The following Monday, the parish priest received a call at the church office,
which was the phone that he'd used that Saturday night. The man that he
spoke with wanted to know why he'd called on Saturday night. The priest
couldn't figure out what the man was talking about. Then the man said "It
rang and rang but I didn't answer." The priest remembered the mishap
and apologised for disturbing him, explaining that he'd intended to call
the presbytery. The man said "That's okay. Let me tell you my story.
You see, I was planning to commit suicide on Saturday night but before I
did, I prayed "God if you're there and you don't want me to do this,
give me a sign now.' At that point, my phone started to ring. I looked at
the caller identity and it said 'Sacred Heart'. I was afraid to answer!"
The Church that the priest attends is called the Sacred Heart Church.
BOOKLET ON THE MEANING OF THE EUCHARIST
God works through all these messy human realities and wants to encounter
us at every Mass. The Lord wants to deeply encounter everyone in the Mass
and especially in the Eucharist. However, it can be hard for us to recognise
his presence. By learning about the deeper meaning behind what Catholics
do at Mass, we lift the veil between the human and divine. Dr Edward Sri
is a professor at the Augustine Institute and a founding leader of Focus,
a campus outreach that pursues college students with intentionality and
love by inviting them into a growing relationship with Jesus and the Catholic
faith, inspiring and equipping them for a lifetime of Christ-centered evangelisation,
discipleship and friendships in which they lead others to do the same. In
this excerpt
from Meaning of the Eucharist, he discusses what the Mass is and the
three ways that every Catholic should know the Eucharist the
memorial of Christs sacrifice on the Cross, the real presence of Jesus
and Holy Communion with Our Lord.
JUST
FOR A LAUGH ...
There once was a rich man who was near death. He was very grieved because
he had worked so hard for his money and wanted to be able to take it with
him to heaven. So he began to pray that he might be able to take some of
his wealth with him. An angel heard his plea and appeared to him. "Sorry,
but you can't take your wealth with you." The man begged the angel
to speak to God to see if He might bend the rules. The man continued to
pray that his wealth could follow him. The angel reappeared and informed
the man that God had decided to allow him to take one suitcase with him.
Overjoyed, the man gathered his largest suitcase and filled it with pure
gold bars and placed it beside his bed. Soon afterward, he died and showed
up at the gates of heaven to greet Saint Peter. Saint Peter, seeing the
suitcase, said "Hold on, you can't bring that in here!" The man
explained to Saint Peter that he had permission and asked him to verify
his story with the Lord. Sure enough, Saint Peter checked it out, came back
and said "You're right. You are allowed one carry-on bag, but I'm supposed
to check its contents before letting it through." Saint Peter opened
the suitcase to inspect the worldly items that the man found too precious
to leave behind and exclaimed "You brought pavement?"

SCOTTISH
BISHOPS WELCOME POPE'S CALL FOR SYNOD IN 2023
Recently the Church celebrated the Feast of Pentecost, the coming of the
Holy Spirit on the Apostles and our Lady at the very beginning, the birthday,
of the Church. We gave thanks for the gifts of the Holy Spirit that first
Pentecost but also celebrated the ongoing gifts of the Holy Spirit to the
Church. Mindful of these gifts the Bishops of Scotland welcome the initiative
of Pope Francis to listen to what the Holy Spirit is saying to the Church,
to the People of God, to listen to one another and to make that Synodal
journey together of communion, participation and mission.
