Meeting people where they are - leading them to where God calls them to be!

BULLETIN                                          11 JULY 2021

FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME IN YEAR 2

SERVICES AND GATHERINGS
Because of the coronavirus pandemic, public Church services and gatherings are limited till further notice.
Father Duncan will live-stream Holy Mass every day and assures you of his prayers for you and your family.

A READING FROM THE HOLY GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MARK (Mark 6:7-13)
Jesus made a tour round the villages, teaching. Then he summoned the Twelve and began to send them out in pairs giving them authority over the unclean spirits. And he instructed them to take nothing for the journey except a staff - no bread, no haversack, no coppers for their purses. They were to wear sandals but, he added "Do not take a spare tunic." And he said to them "If you enter a house anywhere, stay there until you leave the district. And if any place does not welcome you and people refuse to listen to you, as you walk away shake off the dust from under your feet as a sign to them." So they set off to preach repentance and they cast out many devils and anointed many sick people with oil and cured them.
The Gospel of the Lord.

REFLECTION FROM POPE FRANCIS' MESSAGE FOR WORLD MISSION DAY 2021
Our life of faith grows weak, loses its prophetic power and its ability to awaken amazement and gratitude when we become isolated and withdraw into little groups. By its very nature, the life of faith calls for a growing openness to embracing everyone, everywhere. The first Christians, far from yielding to the temptation to become an elite group, were inspired by the Lord and his offer of new life to go out among the nations and to bear witness to what they had seen and heard - the good news that the Kingdom of God is at hand. They did so with the generosity, gratitude and nobility typical of those who sow seeds in the knowledge that others will enjoy the fruit of their efforts and sacrifice. I like to think that 'even those who are most frail, limited and troubled can be missionaries in their own way, for goodness can always be shared, even if it exists alongside many limitations' (Christus Vivit, 239). Always, but especially in these times of pandemic, it is important to grow in our daily ability to widen our circle, to reach out to others who, albeit physically close to us, are not immediately part of our 'circle of interests' (compare with Fratelli Tutti, 97). To be on mission is to be willing to think as Christ does, to believe with him that those around us are also my brothers and sisters. May his compassionate love touch our hearts and make us all true missionary disciples.

THE LORD'S DAY AT HOME
If you are housebound or self-isolating at this time, please use these prayers to unite yourself with the worship of the Universal Church, and your own parish, this Sunday. If alone, read or say these prayers quietly to yourself. If with another, or in a family, someone should read the Gospel and others respond. It might be suitable to find a special, quiet place at home for your Sunday prayers.

SINGING IS GOOD FOR YOU!
We are looking forward to the next few weeks when we can hopefully sing in Church again. Not only is singing a great way to raise money, research shows that it's also good for you. Professor Graham Welch, Chair of Music Education at the Institute of Education, University of London, has studied developmental and medical aspects of singing for thirty years says "The health benefits of singing are both physical and psychological. Singing has physical benefits because it is an aerobic activity that increases oxygenation in the blood stream and exercises major muscle groups in the upper body, even when sitting. Singing has psychological benefits because of its normally positive effect in reducing stress levels through the action of the endocrine system which is linked to our sense of emotional well-being. Psychological benefits are also evident when people sing together as well as alone because of the increased sense of community, belonging and shared endeavour." And just think - you are getting all this for free in our Churches!

PRAYER FOR SPIRITUAL COMMUNION
My Jesus, I believe that you are present in this Holy Sacrament of the altar. I love you above all things and I passionately desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come spiritually into my soul so that I may unite myself wholly to you now and forever. Amen.

FEED YOUR SOUL - RENEWING OUR PARISH COMMUNITIES
Catechesis helps believers to understand the importance of the liturgy in the Church's life, initiates them into the knowledge of the sacraments and into sacramental life, especially the sacrament of the Eucharist, source and summit of the life and mission of the Church. Catechesis educates the believer in the attitudes that the Church's celebration require: joy for the festive quality of celebrations, a sense of community, attentive listening to the word of God, confident prayer, praise and thanksgiving, awareness of symbols and signs. Catechesis teaches the believer to understand the liturgical year, the true teacher of the faith and the significance of Sunday, the day of the Lord and of the Christian community. Catechesis also aids in the appreciation of the expressions of faith found in popular piety.

KIDS' LOVE
A group of professional people posed this question to a group of four to eight year-olds - What does love mean?. The answers they got were broader and deeper than anyone could have imagined. See what you think.
   • When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn't bend over and paint her toenails anymore. My grandfather does it for her all the time, even after his hands got arthritis too. That's love. Rebecca - aged 8
   • Love is when a girl puts on perfume and a boy puts on shaving cologne and they go out and smell each other. Karl - aged 5
   • Love is when my mummy makes coffee for my daddy and she takes a sip before giving it to him to make sure the taste is okay. Danny - aged 7
   • Love is what's in the room with you at Christmas if you stop opening presents and listen. Bobby - aged 7
   • If you want to learn to love better, you should start with a friend who you hate. Nikka - aged 6
   • Love is like a little old woman and a little old man who are still friends even after they know each other so well." Tommy - aged 6
   • During my piano recital, I was on a stage and scared. I looked at all the people watching me and saw my daddy waving and smiling. He was the only one doing that. I wasn't scared anymore. Cindy - aged 8
   • My mummy loves me more than anybody. You don't see anyone else kissing me to sleep at night. Clare - aged 6
   • Love is when mummy gives daddy the best piece of chicken. Elaine - aged 6
   • Love is when mummy sees daddy smelly and sweaty and still says he is handsomer than Robert Redford. Chris - aged 7
   • Love is when your puppy licks your face even after you left him alone all day. Mary Ann - aged 4
   • I know my older sister loves me because she gives me all her old clothes and has to go out and buy new ones. Lauren - aged 4
   • I let my big sister pick on me because my mum says she only picks on me because she loves me. So I pick on my baby sister because I love her. Bethany - aged 4
   • When you love somebody, your eyelashes go up and down and little stars come out of you. Karen - aged 7
   • You really shouldn't say "I love you" unless you mean it - but if you mean it, you should say it a lot. People forget. Jessica - aged 8

JUST FOR A LAUGH ...
The parish priest was wired for sound with a lapel mike and as he preached, he moved briskly about the platform, jerking the mike cord as he went. Then he moved to one side, getting wound up in the cord and nearly tripping before jerking it again. After several circles and jerks, a little girl in the third pew leaned toward her mother and whispered "If he gets loose, will he hurt us?"
