SAINT PETER IN CHAINS, ARDROSSAN

LETTER TO THE PRIESTS AND PEOPLE OF THE DIOCESE OF GALLOWAY

My dear brothers and sisters,

After months of preparation and weeks of anxiety, we have reached, thank God, the eve of the Holy Father's arrival in Scotland.

There is no need to explain to you yet again the importance of the visit, nor to dwell on the worry we have all experienced recently as it seemed more and more likely that the visit would have to be cancelled.

But what I want you to know is that the Pope personally has worked extremely hard and courageously to ensure that the visit takes place. He is aware of how much it means to us and how great would have been our disappointment if it had been put off. The Holy Father has been determined to come, despite the Falklands conflict and despite the risk that his visit might be misinterpreted.

I ask you, therefore, to show your gratitude to the Pope by your fervent prayers that the visit will be a success and by the enthusiasm with which you respond to his presence and his words. Let him know how much we appreciate his visit and how loyal we are to his office and his teaching.

This evening, Pentecost Sunday, I invite the priests and people of the diocese to concelebrate with me, at 6.00 pm, in Good Shepherd Cathedral, a Mass of Intercession for the safety of the Holy Father, the success of the visit and an honourable and just peace between Britain and Argentina.

May the Lord protect you on your journeys to Murrayfield and Bellahouston and may He bless us all with His love and joy in these historic days.

Yours sincerely in Jesus Christ
MAURICE TAYLOR
Bishop of Galloway

This is most important in the case of children, the elderly and inform. It is vital that immediate identification is available in case of strayed children or sickness of elderly or infirm.

You are asked to bring fold-away seating.

Please cooperate with police and stewards before, during and after Mass, particularly during the period one hour before to one hour after the Mass.

There are no nearby car parks available so you are advised against bringing your car.

All special trains will arrive and depart from Corkerhill Station with shuttle service operating to and from Cardonald and Maxwell Park. Up to 1000 trains will be operating.

Special pedestrian routes have been arranged to and from railway stations and car parks. Police will be on hand to assist you so please follow their instructions.

No camping stoves or other cooking facilities will be allowed within the park.

Police hope that the congregation will assist in operating the no alcohol rule.

Broken glass can cause problems and so police ask that, where possible, plastic containers be used by those bringing packed meals.

Please remember to take great care with your personal possessions including ticket, money and keys. Bags and luggage should be kept to a minimum.

Entry for all persons forming the congregation will be via the gates in Mosspark Boulevard. When you present your ticket, a portion will be retained by the steward and the major part of the ticket containing your name, address and parish will be returned to you after a colour code and corral number has been affixed. Follow the corresponding colour signs which will lead you to the corral as numbered on your ticket.
