ADDIE HISSEY
Addie Hissey
was born Agnes McCabe at 10 Glebe Street, Saltcoats on 17 December 1907. Her father
was Hugh McCabe (1865-1920) and her mother was Margaret McCafferty (1866-1940).
She had siblings Jean (1891-), John, Margaret (1894-1964), Rosean (1896-1914),
Mary (1898-1998), James (1900-1966), Anne (1902-2002), Hugh (1904-) and Kathleen
(1905-1917). Agnes was baptised in the Church of Our Lady, Star of the Sea on
26 December 1907 by Father William Keogh (1877-1942).
Addie and Harry Hissey
(1897-1976) were married in Saint Bride's Church, West Kilbride on 27 September
1948 by Addie's cousin Father, later Canon, George McCafferty (1906-2000). They
had a son, Paul.
Addie trained as a primary school teacher at Craiglockhart
College, Edinburgh. She taught in Saint Bridget's School, Kilbirnie, Saint Mary's
School, Saltcoats, Argyle School, Saltcoats, Saint John's School, Stevenston and
Saint Winning's School, Kilwinning from where she retired.
Addie celebrated
her one hundredth birthday on 17 December 2007 and was present at the Vigil Mass
on 15 December. Father Matt congratulated Addie
on her longevity and presented her with rosary beads. Addie thanked the congregation
for being kind to her throughout her fifty years in Ardrossan.
Agnes died
on 20 January 2009 on the eve of the feast of Saint Agnes. Following her Requiem
Mass on 30 January, Addie was buried in Ardrossan Cemetery. May she rest in peace.
