FINANCES
Bankers Orders for the Parish and Parish Centre amount to £3500 per month. We are grateful for your generous support in collections. If you can manage a little more from time to time, it would be a great help. A Standing Order would make the handling of money so much easier. Have you signed a Gift Aid form? If you are a taxpayer the Church would get 25p added to every £1 you donate.

COLLECTIONS
Last weekend's Offertory collection amounted to £607.54 and the Maintenance Fund collection to £237.65 - thanks.

SECOND COLLECTION FOR THE DAY FOR LIFE
The second collection this weekend is for the Day for Life which took place on 31 May. Thank you for your generosity.

GIFT AID
The Inland Revenue now requires us to use a new style of Gift Aid form. These are available at the back of the Church and on the parish website. If you pay tax, please complete the new form and return it to the box provided. This allows us to provide the additional information required on the Gift Aid claim. Gift Aid is a vital source of income. All that is needed is that you pay tax. You simply declare that you give funds to the Church. We do the rest. Why not sign a form today? We get back an extra 25p for every £1 you give the Church in your weekly collection or by way of a donation. There is no need to cancel or renew it. We simply claim in the income we receive.

THE FAITH OF A CHILD
During China's 1911 Republican Revolution or the earlier Boxer Rebellion (1899-1901), anti-Catholic militants seized a Catholic parish. They confined the parish priest to house arrest. From his Presbytery window he witnessed the desecration of the Church. He knew that there had been many consecrated hosts in the tabernacle. An eleven-year-old girl was praying at the back of the Church and the guards either did not see her or else paid no attention to her. They broke open the tabernacle and scattered the Blessed Sacrament all over the floor. The young girl returned to the Church that night and made a Holy Hour and then consumed one of the Sacred Hosts, bending down to receive Jesus on her tongue. She continued to return every night, making a nightly Holy Hour and consuming one Sacred Host each time. On the last night, unfortunately, a guard was awakened after she consumed the last Sacred Host. He chased her, grabbed her and beat her to death with his rifle. Archbishop Fulton Sheen became aware of her martyrdom while he was a seminarian. He was so inspired by her sacrifice that he promised to pray a holy hour before the Blessed Sacrament each day for the rest of his life. The eleven-year-old girl could have had no idea how she would have influenced a future bishop who would in turn influence millions and promote Eucharistic Adoration throughout the world. We also have no idea how our witness and sacrifices influence others. As Jesus says in the Gospel today "He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me and I live in him." (John 6:56). There are no words to describe that most precious moment when you return to your seat to spend quiet moments with Jesus. You are one with Jesus and he is one with you. It is a moment of intimacy with Jesus when you and Jesus are 'all wrapped up in each other' - "He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me and I live in him."

JUST FOR A LAUGH…
• A parish priest was completing a sermon on abstaining from drinking alcohol. With great expression, he said "If I had all of the beer in the world, I'd take it and throw it into the river." With even greater emphasis, he said "And if I had all of the wine in the world, I'd take it and throw it into the river." And then finally, he thundered "And if I had all of the whisky in the world, I'd take it and throw it into the river." The Church was silent. Not a single person made a sound. The music leader then stood up hesitantly and said "For our closing song, let us sing the hymn Shall We Gather at the River."
• A parish priest, who was known for his lengthy sermons, noticed a man get up and leave during the middle of his sermon. The man returned just before the conclusion of the Mass. Afterwards, the priest asked the man where he had gone. "I went to get a haircut" the man replied. 'Why didn't you do that before the Mass?" the priest exclaimed. "Well" the man said "because I didn't need one then."

FATHER JOHN'S TWENTY-FIVE YEARS OF PRIESTHOOD
On Tuesday 29 May 2018, Father John Maendeleo, shown below, celebrated twenty-five years of priesthood. Father John was a priest in residence at Saint Peter's from 7 June 2006 till he returned to his native Tanzania on 1 February 2008. As well as helping Canon Matt with his duties in Ardrossan, Father John assisted in neighbouring parishes. On his anniversary, the 10.00am Mass was celebrated for Father John. There was also an opportunity to donate to a monetary gift for him. Thank you for all the kind donations of £740 for Father John. If you would still like to donate, please feel free to drop an envelope in this weekend's collection or to the Parish Office. Thank you.

WHY GO TO CHURCH?
If anyone asks you Why go to Church? then tell them this. At a confirmation, a boy, asked by the bishop if he thinks he should go to Church every Sunday, replied "Would you go and watch the same movie every week?" If Christianity is to flourish in our society and not become the practice of a dwindling minority, then we have to recapture some sense of it as 'a huge event' that grants us life to which we simply must go. The Eucharist forms us as people who believe, hope and have charity. Faith, hope and charity are ways in which God makes his home in us and we are at home in God. Our 'yes' to the Body of Christ transforms how we belong to each other and therefore who we are. Churches remind us that we are pilgrims. We are on the way. We drag ourselves out of bed and leave our houses because they are not our final homes.                              Father Timothy Radcliffe
