FATHER JOHN'S TWENTY-FIVE YEARS OF PRIESTHOOD
Thank you to everyone who contributed to the recent donation of £800
for Father John Maendeleo's twenty-fifth
anniversary celebration. Father John
thanks each one of you for your kindness and generosity and want you to know
that he will always keep you in his prayers.
A FATHER'S EYES
Jonathan's mother died when he was very young and his father brought him up.
Both of them shared a very special relationship. Jonathan loved to play football
and his father made sure that he was always there to cheer his son at every
match even if Jonathan wasn't a part of the playing team. Jonathan, being
small sized, wasn't allowed to play in the main team. Nevertheless, he continued
with his practice with full determination. Everyone thought that Jonathan
would never be able to make it into the team though somehow his determination
carried him through. The coach, seeing his diligence and dedication, decided
to keep him on the roster. One day during practice, the coach met him with
a telegram. Jonathan was shocked to read the message contained in it. Swallowing
hard, he mumbled to the coach "My father died this morning. Will it be
all right if I miss practice today?" The coach gently put his arm around
his shoulder and said "Take the rest of the week off, son, and don't
even plan to come to the game on Saturday." On the day of the game, Jonathan's
college team was losing badly to the rival team. The coach and the players
had all lost hope when they saw Jonathan coming towards them. Jonathan ran
up to the coach and pleaded him to allow him to play this match. At first,
the coach wouldn't allow him to play. However after a lot of persuasion, the
coach gave in. No sooner Jonathan joined the team in the field, their scores
started to improve before both the teams were on a tie. However, the real
cheer came during the crucial closing seconds when he intercepted a pass and
ran all the way for the winning touchdown. His team members were ecstatic.
The crowd came running towards him to celebrate the win. After the match,
the coach went up to Jonathan, who was seated alone in the corner of the locker
room and asked "Kid, I can't believe it. You were fantastic! Tell me
what got into you? How did you do it?" He looked at the coach, with tears
in his eyes, and said, "Well, you knew my dad died but did you know that
my dad was blind?" The young man swallowed hard and forced a smile "Dad
came to all my games, but today was the first time he could see me play, and
I wanted to show him I could do it!"
JUST FOR A LAUGH…
•A man trying to understand the nature of God and asked him "God, how
long is a million years to you?" God answered " A million years
is like a minute". "Then the man asked "God, how much is a
million pounds to you?" And God replied "A million pounds is like
a penny". Finally, the man asked "God, could you give me a penny?"
And God said "In a minute."
•After starting a new diet, I altered my drive to work to avoid passing my
favourite bakery. I accidentally drove by the bakery this morning and as I
approached, there in the window were a host of chocolates, doughnuts, and
cheesecakes. I felt this was no accident, so I prayed - "Lord, it's up
to You. If You want me to have any of those delicious goodies, create a parking
place for me directly in front of the bakery." And sure enough, on the
eighth time around the block, there it was! God is so good!
•A man walking along Ardrossan beach was deep in prayer. All of a sudden,
he said out loud, "Lord, grant me one wish." Suddenly the sky clouded
above his head and in a booming voice, the Lord said, "Because you have
tried to be faithful to me in all ways, I will grant you one wish." The
man said "Build a bridge to Benidorm so I can drive over anytime I want
to." The Lord said "Your request is very materialistic. Think of
the logistics of that kind of undertaking. The supports required to reach
the bottom of the ocean! The concrete and steel it would take! I can do it,
but it is hard for me to justify your desire for worldly things. Take a little
more time and think of another wish, a wish you think would honour and glorify
me." The man thought about it for a long time. Finally, he said, "Lord,
I wish that I could understand women. I want to know how they feel inside,
what they are thinking when they give me the silent treatment, why they cry,
what they mean when they say "nothing" and how I can make a woman
truly happy." After a few minutes God said "You want two or four
lanes on that bridge?"
A BLESSED FATHERS' DAY
Father's
Day means more to me now that my dad has passed away than it ever did when
he was still alive. It's strange to say that, I know but that's been my experience
over the three years since my dad's death. It's as if knowing how the story
of his life ended has given much more meaning to all the chapters that went
before, some of which I lived together with him and, of course, when he was
alive, I didn't miss him as much as I do now. I could always call or visit
then - now I can't. My dad wasn't a perfect father and he would have been
the first one to admit it - and yet, somehow, experiencing his fatherhood
in my life, and reflecting on that fatherhood, has helped me get to know our
heavenly Father better. God the Father revealed his limitless love to me many
times through my earthly father's limited expressions of love. God the Father
loves me, loves each of us unconditionally - just because of who we are, not
because of our performance, or what we do. I wish all of you a happy Father's
Day, and I will be praying that each and every one of us receives the grace
to experience the Father's love afresh. Father
John Bartunek

IN AND AROUND THE CHURCH
The boilers will need a repair soon although we are not using them at the
moment. Margaret, Myriame and Harry have worked very hard in the Church grounds
with tree bark on the flower beds and new plants. Bill will add a proper door
hook to the inner side door to
the Church. The recovering of the foyer chairs in the Parish Centre by Beverley
and Fiona is almost complete and will make a huge difference with the famous
Saint Ninian's Papal Tartan covering. Sincere thanks go to all our parishioners
and their hard work and efforts.
EMBRACING CHANGE UPDATE
The Maryvale Ministry Course is going very well with our 'students' filling
in a questionnaire and evaluation. There seems to be a general very positive
response and contentment with the course. We also had a special day for all
our Eucharistic Ministers with around ninety participants on 2 June. The evaluation
was very positive indeed and we will definitely offer a similar day next year.
PARISH FUNDRAISER - CREAM TEA
There will be a parish fundraiser on Saturday 23 June in the Parish Centre.
We welcome you to a Cream Tea or Coffee et cetera from 10.30am to 12.30pm.
There will be sales tables and a raffle to raise much needed funds towards
Church maintenance. We rely on your usual good support as this will enhance
our Church surroundings and we look forward to any donations or prizes for
the raffle. Tickets, costing £2 for adults and £1 for children,
will be on sale at weekends during June or from the Parish Office. Many
thanks. Myriame
Sammons, 469006
PARISH FEAST DAY COMING SOON!
Our
Parish Feast Day is coming soon on Friday 29 June, the feast of Saints Peter
and Paul, a Holiday of Obligation. We could celebrate our saint on the following
weekend, 30 June and 1 July. A special custom for the celebration of Saint
Peter is the Lammas Bread. This comes from the words Loaf-Mass Bread. Special
breads or scones are baked and brought to the altar at the Offertory, blessed
and distributed at the end of Mass. Fiona has agreed to make the Lammas Bread
for the Church and primary school Masses.
